Message from the President

Welcome Knik Tribal Members, friends and neighbors, to the website of the Knik Tribal Council (KTC) Community.

As the President of the KTC, I invite you to explore this site and learn more about our Tribe and broader community relationships within our home of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.

Through these pages, we hope to keep our members, friends and neighbors informed of the news and events that affect our Tribal Community.
As a federally recognized Tribe, KTC approach to our self-governance is with the most important fundamental question in mind: How will our decision made today -- affect our children and the children that follow them?

We conduct ourselves with the promise to strive for healthy homes, high-quality education for our children and loving care for our elders. KTC is committed to building safe neighborhoods and a clean environment that promotes opportunity and prosperity along with cultural pride and diversity. As a Tribal community, we recognize the need to sustain our values and further the hopes and dreams for current and all generations to follow.

I appreciate your interest in the Knik Tribal Council website and we look forward to you working with us to build the best community possible for our Alaskan Native Peoples, their children and their children to come.  If you have any questions that are not answered with this website about the Knik Tribal Council and its programs provided for the Native community residing in the Mat-Su Valley, I invite you to talk with one of our staff.

Partnership with Mat-Su Borough School District

KTC is hosting the Mat-Su Borough School District’s Assistant Director of Federal Programs, Marci Orth, once a week at our tribal offices. This is an effort to increase the School district’s availability to our Tribal Members for any concerns or questions they may have about their children’s education.

Thursdays are when Marci expects to be here. She will be here in the mornings and as needed throughout the school year. KTC appreciates this partnership and is honored to be a partner in the education of our tribal members’ children.

Anthony Keller saves life of little girl

On October 2, 2011 in Kenai, Alaska at the Quality Inn a 5 year old little girl was in the hottub with her guardian. The guardian looked away for a moment and the little girl submerged. She was motionless when they pulled her from the hot tub with a blue complexion. She was also not breathing. During the commotion a man attempted to give CPR.

Anthony Keller was outside and came in to see what was taking place and he noticed the man was not giving correct CPR. Anthony went into action and took control of the scene stating “I’m trained in CPR”. Anthony began giving the 30 compressions to the little girl. These compressions pushed the fluid from the little girls’ lungs and then he gave 2 rescue breaths. At that point the little girl began to gasp and color returned to her face.

Investigating officer Jeff Whannell of the Kenai Police Department reported this event..

I had the pleasure of conducting a CPR/ AED/First Aid class this past August and one of my students went on to save a life.
