Adult Vocational Training & Direct Employment

Knik Tribal Council offers Adult Vocational Training and Direct Employment to our members and any Alaska Native/American Indian in our service area that is at least one quarter (1/4 or 0.25) Alaska Native/American Indian or an enrolled member of another federally recognized tribe or eligible for enrollment with another federally recognized tribe.

Adult Vocational Training

Adult Vocational Training is for individuals who are seeking training or schooling in a less than four year program or are taking less than 12 credit hours per semester in college.

This program helps with the costs of schooling including such trainings as: CDL classes, Associates Degrees, AVTEC courses, phlebotomy classes, medical assistant classes, and much more.

To qualify for this program you must be unemployed or under employed, live in the Mat-Su Valley, and be at least one quarter Alaska Native/American Indian.

To apply you must first determine where you want to go to school and get the information from the school, such as the cost of the courses, books, tools, and materials. Then fill out the application, including a letter of intent and a Certificate of Indian Blood if you are not a member of Knik Tribal Council.

Applications will not be reviewed until they are complete.

Once an application is completed it is reviewed by the Educational Coordinator and a recommendation is given. Then the Executive Director reviews the recommendation and determines the amount of funding. Once the Executive Director has signed off on the amount, the Bookkeeper makes sure that there is that amount of funding available in the grant and signs off on it. Then a check is issued to the school or vender.

All determinations of funding are based on unmet need which takes into account household income, expenses, other sources of funding and the cost of the school.

Direct Employment

To apply for Direct Employment you must live in the Mat-Su Valley and be at least one quarter (1/4 or 0.25%) Alaska Native/American Indian, be employed or have an employer who is going to hire you.

Direct Employment provides funding to train Alaska Native/American Indians or provide them with gear or tools needed to become employed, keep their employment, or advance their employment.

The application for Direct Employment is the same as the Adult Vocational Training application. You still need to provide your Certificate of Indian Blood if you are not a Knik Tribal Council Member and to be eligible for this program you must provide a letter from your employer stating you need the training, tools, or gear to get, keep, or advance in your employment.

The process the applications go through is the same as for Adult Vocational Training, with the exception that we try to expedite the process so as to ensure that the applicants get what they need as quickly as possible.
