Knik Tribal Council is based and was founded on the behalf of the 28 Base Members, their spouses and their children. The Base Members of Knik Tribal Council are those that were listed on the ANCSA Rolls as being from Knik. These individuals are the back bone of Knik Tribal Council. They are the ones that make Knik Tribal Council possible. They are the ones that decided that all Alaska Natives/American Indians should be able to receive services through Knik Tribal Council. Descendants and spouses of Base Members and Voting Members are eligible for Voting Membership with Knik Tribal Council. To qualify the individual must be one quarter Alaska Native/American Indian and have verification that they are either: a direct lineal descendent of a Base Member or Married to a Base Member or Voting Member. Voting Members are very important to Knik Tribal Council, they are the ones that decide who is put on the Council, which in turn makes the decisions about what Knik does. Without the Base and Voting Members, there would be no Knik.
Knik Tribal Council has 'open enrollment'; which simply means that you don't have to be from Knik Village to become a member of Knik Tribal Council. You can be from any Village anywhere, here in Alaska or in the lower 48 and be eligible for membership. The requirements to become a Associate Member of Knik Tribal Council are:
At least one quarter(1/4 or 25%) Alaska Native/American Indian Have lived in the Mat-Su Valley for at least one (1) year
You must be able to provide proof of both of the requirements before you are eligible for enrollment. You must also submit a complete Membership Application for the Council to review.
The Membership Applications are reviewed by the Council once a month at a regularly scheduled Council Meeting. Council Meetings occur the second Saturday of every month. After an application has been reviewed and approved by the Council applicants will receive a letter of acceptance and a Certificate of Membership in the mail. Once these documents are received, new members must come to the Knik Tribal office and get a photo ID made. This ID is for use at the dentist and optometrist, without it they will not see you. Knik is open 8am-4pm Monday thru Friday, new members can come in any time to get their ID's made. It only takes 5-10 minutes to make the ID.
ID's do have expiration dates. The expiration date is on the back of the ID card at the very bottom. It is two (2) years from the issue date.
Membership with Knik Tribal Council allows you to see our Dentist and Optometrist, makes you eligible for Indian Child Welfare Advocacy and other services listed at left.'
