Knik Tribal Council provides a Strengthening Families Program to the community. This program is called a Best Practice; meaning that it has been used in many different places and has been studied and shown to have positive results in those settings. Knik has slightly modified the program by adding family activities outside of the program to allow the youth and parents to spend time together and have fun together. The Strengthening Families Program teaches youth resiliency skills, how to set goals, how to communicate with their parents, and how to work with their parents to reach their goals. This program also teaches parents about their youth, showing them that youth are under stress too, that their youth have goals and how to help their youth reach their goals, how to reward positive behavior, and how to talk to their youth. The youth and parents meet separately for the first part of each session, then together to practice the skills they learned. This program is designed for families with youth ages 10-14 (though a little younger and a little older is fine), the meetings are twice a week for three and a half weeks, three hours each. The first hour is for dinner (which Knik provides), the second is the parent and youth sessions, the third is the youth and parent together sessions.
